Colouring with children: a few ideas
Colouring pages are more than a way to fill a rainy day. Children practise holding a pencil, staying within an area and choosing colours deliberately. Above all, it's fun, and that's reason enough.
Almost every child knows dogs, cats and horses from everyday life, so a favourite colour is often already decided. Dinosaurs suit anyone who likes things wild: a Tyrannosaurus can be green, blue or striped, since nobody knows for sure. The sea creatures invite conversations about the ocean: where does a clownfish live? How long have turtles existed? The farm is ideal for the youngest children because the cow and pig have large, clear areas.
Paper and pencils
Ordinary printer paper is enough for coloured pencils and wax crayons. Felt-tip pens bleed through, so use paper of at least 120 g/m². Watercolours need sturdy drawing paper. Print each file at actual size to keep an even margin.
What can you do with the finished pictures?
Hang them up, give them away or collect them. Many families keep a folder for all their finished pictures. Add a date on the back and, over the years, it becomes a lovely record of how their colouring has changed.
Learning along the way
Each of the three themes brings its own questions. Why does the Triceratops have three horns? How does a sea turtle breathe underwater? What does the tractor do in the field when nothing is being harvested? You don't need to know everything: looking things up together is part of the fun. A colouring page becomes a little project that lasts beyond those twenty minutes at the kitchen table. On the next visit to the zoo, aquarium or farm, your child will recognise the animals from the paper.
