Swedish Vallhund (Västgötaspets)

Schwedischer Wallhund als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: sandfarbenes Schlafzimmer

A herding dog of 33 centimetres that drives cattle at their heels. In the early 1940s, two Swedes searched Västergötland for the last dogs of this old type. Around Vara, they found a few animals of consistent type.

FCI Group 5 (Spitz and primitive types), Section 3 Nordic Watchdogs and Herders, Standard No. 14, without working trial
Country of origin Sweden
Height at the withers Ideal height males 33 cm, females 31 cm; 2 cm above or 1 cm below tolerated
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy Median 14,0 years among 61 Vallhunds (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Medium-length, harsh, close-fitting outer coat; soft, very dense undercoat
Colours according to the standard Grey, greyish brown, greyish yellow, reddish yellow or reddish brown with darker outer hairs; pale harness and cheek markings desirable; a little white allowed; black, white, liver and blue disqualify

Vikings, Corgis or both?

The standard calls the Västgötaspets a genuinely Swedish breed and leaves open how it is related to the Welsh Corgi Pembroke. It says we will never know who took which dog aboard Viking ships. The breed owes its recognition to Count Björn von Rosen and headmaster Zetterstén; the FCI has listed it since 1954.

Watchful and fearless

Watchful, energetic, fearless and attentive: this is the standard’s description; aggressive or overly shy dogs are disqualified. As a cattle driver, it learned to get livestock moving from behind. Some Vallhunds show the same impulse towards running children or joggers, when a clear stop cue helps.

Work for short legs

The legs are short; the stamina is not. Varied daily walks, plus treibball, herding exercises, scent work or tricks keep it content.

Long tail, short tail

The standard permits both: a long tail and any length of natural bobtail. A study of the T-box mutation explaining short tails in many breeds found no dogs with two copies, suggesting a lethal effect in that form. In Vallhunds, litters from two short-tailed parents were 29 per cent smaller (Hytönen et al. 2009).

A coat for all weather

The harsh outer coat over very dense undercoat needs little work. Weekly brushing is enough, more often during shedding.

Keep an eye on eyes and hips

In the British analysis, 61 Vallhunds reached a median of 14,0 years, compared with 12,0 in crossbreeds. The sample is small (McMillan et al. 2024). Among 324 Vallhunds examined from seven countries, ophthalmologists described a distinct form of retinal degeneration that rarely seriously affected vision (Cooper et al. 2014). An insertion in the MERTK gene increased risk about twentyfold (Everson et al. 2017). Among 416 Vallhunds X-rayed in Sweden, 22,4 per cent had hip grades C to E (Engdahl et al. 2026). Ask for the parents’ eye examinations, genetic tests and hip dysplasia results.

A good choice for

active people seeking a small, robust dog keen to work, who enjoy training outdoors. Life with children works when adults guide its herding behaviour.

Less suitable if

you want a quiet sofa companion or a vocal sentry would cause trouble in a shared building.

For the other Corgi, read the entry on the Welsh Corgi Cardigan. The breed quiz can assess whether a little cattle driver fits your daily routine; the book explores more thoroughly: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the weeks with a puppy, get help from the free Puppy Starter Pack. Its pale cheek markings look striking on a poster in a wooden frame; find more styles among our dog portraits.
