Istrian Short-haired Hound (Istarski Kratkodlaki Gonic)

Kurzhaarige Istrianer Bracke als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: altrosafarbenes Schlafzimmer

Four dogs carved on a column capital at Dubrovnik’s Franciscan monastery between 1327 and 1348: the FCI standard names these as the earliest evidence of the Istrian Short-haired Hound’s ancestors, an old eastern Adriatic white scent hound with markings from which the breed developed.

FCI Group 6 (Scent hounds and related breeds), Section 1.2 Medium-sized Hounds, Standard No. 151, with working trial
Country of origin Croatia
Height at the withers Males 49 to 53 cm, females 47 to 51 cm; with excellent type, 3 cm above or below tolerated
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy No reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat Short (1 to 2 cm), harsh, dense, glossy and close-fitting
Colours according to the standard Snow white with clearly defined, evenly toned orange markings totalling no more than a third of body surface; head never entirely orange, no third colour

Traces in churches and monasteries

The standard lists further images: a 1474 Adoration of the Magi in the cemetery chapel near Beram, Istria, and a 1476 altarpiece in Zadar’s Saint Francis church, where the ancestor still appears tricoloured. Bishop Petar Bakić of Đakovo recorded in 1719 that these hounds were bred before the 14th century. The first FCI standard came on 2 April 1955. Find the longer, rough-coated relative under Istrian Wire-haired Hound (Istarski Oštrodlaki Gonič).

A hound for stone and scree

Intended as an enduring scent hound for hare, fox and wild boar, also usable on wounded-game blood trails. The standard particularly recommends rough, stony karst. The body is fine-boned and elegant, longer than tall, with elbow height half the height at the withers.

Gentle with their people, cool with strangers

Lively, kind, gentle and obedient, neither fearful nor aggressive, devoted to their person and suspicious of strangers: the standard’s portrait. Readily trained for hunting, with a strong, melodious voice. Agreeable day to day, but fresh scent makes the job outrank recall, with audible voice.

Activity and grooming

Without hunting, provide long daily distances and genuine nose work, such as long-line tracking or mantrailing. Short, harsh hair is quickly managed with a weekly rubber grooming mitt; inspect paws and pads after countryside outings. Grey-black specks on pink skin are allowed under the standard.

What is known about genes and health

We found no disease studies; McMillan and colleagues list but do not analyse the breed. A Croatian genomic study examined 520 pedigrees: mean inbreeding coefficient 0,42 per cent, effective population size around 111, indicating well-preserved diversity. The Croatian Kennel Club registered 862 puppies in 2019, with a declining trend. Genetically closest are Italian Segugio breeds, including the Italian Wire-haired Segugio (Segugio Italiano a pelo forte) (Djurkin Kušec et al. 2020).

Who will enjoy this dog

Hunters and highly active rural people gain a friendly, easy-care partner. Anyone seeking woodland off-lead walks, living among noise-sensitive neighbours or short of time should choose another breed.
