A Westie can enthusiastically investigate every hedge in the morning and lie contentedly beside you in the evening. Making both possible takes a routine with exercise, small tasks and rest. The white coat is unmistakable, but tells you little about the dog’s needs.

The West Highland White Terrier is a small, confident terrier. The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as alert, cheerful and independent. For you, that means allowing time for learning together and deciding based on the daily life you can offer. Source: Rassestandard des Royal Kennel Club.
Can a Westie live in a flat and with a family?
A flat can work if walks and activities are reliably part of the routine. A garden does not replace that shared time. With children, the individual dog, previous experiences and respectful handling matter. Do not leave dogs and small children together unsupervised. Westies were bred to hunt: small pets in the household need particular care and secure separation. Source: PDSA-Rasseportrait.
Before deciding, make a weekly plan: who takes the morning walk? Who steps in when a working day runs late? Where can the dog sleep undisturbed? Include grooming, training and vet costs too. A sample schedule with clear responsibilities shows more quickly than a breed description whether a dog fits your life now.
Walks: sniffing is part of the point
Plan several daily outings that let your Westie explore. Their length and difficulty depend on age, health and fitness. A fixed number of minutes cannot replace that judgement.
On the next walk, try three simple aims: a quiet stretch for sniffing, an easy exercise your dog already knows and a relaxed journey home. You do not need to complete a training programme outdoors. Instead, watch whether your dog is still responsive and choose a quieter route when things are busy.
Practise recall before distractions get difficult
An interesting scent can matter a great deal to a terrier. Build recall in small steps. Blue Cross recommends starting close to the dog without distractions and increasing difficulty only after reliable success.
- Choose a cue everyone in the household uses consistently, such as “Here”. Start at home over a short distance.
- Call kindly and reward your dog as soon as they reach you. Use food they tolerate or a game they enjoy.
- Outdoors, start in quiet places. Attach a longer training line to a well-fitting harness and keep away from roads.
- If your dog does not come, avoid constantly repeating the cue. Calmly make the situation safe, then practise at an easier level. Do not scold when your dog eventually arrives.
Also call your dog occasionally, reward them and let them explore again. That way, coming back does not always mean the walk ends. Off-lead exercise is an option only when recall, surroundings and local rules allow it. Source: Blue Cross, Rückruftraining.
Grooming: small routines instead of big battles
The Westie coat consists of a harsh outer coat and soft undercoat. This breed sheds too. Grooming therefore needs a fixed place in the weekly plan. Source: Royal Kennel Club, Rasseprofil.
Brush and comb regularly, checking the legs, belly and areas under the harness especially carefully. Have someone show you suitable tools and techniques. Begin with short, friendly sessions and do not force tools through matting. Sensitive skin or tight knots call for an expert assessment.
A complete care plan also includes nails, ears and teeth. Discuss hand-stripping or other coat treatment with an experienced professional based on the actual coat. For a family dog, no useful blanket rule can replace individual assessment. Source: West Highland White Terrier Club of America, Fellpflege.
Take itching seriously
Skin allergies are among the known health problems in Westies. That does not mean every Westie is affected. Recurrent itching or inflamed skin should be checked by a vet. White fur alone proves neither an allergy nor a particular food intolerance. Source: PDSA, Gesundheitsrisiken beim Westie.
Before the appointment, note when symptoms began and what you changed recently. Photos of affected areas can document progress. Bring the current food packaging and a list of every snack. This gives concrete information instead of repeatedly trying new products on a hunch.
A food-based activity idea
A fillable toy can provide a small task between other activities. One example is the red KONG Classic in size S on Amazon (advertisement / affiliate link) . Made from natural rubber, it is intended for average-strength chewers according to the manufacturer. We have not tested it ourselves.
Choose the size according to your dog’s weight and mouth size. Size S is not automatically right for every Westie. The manufacturer recommends choosing the larger size if unsure; particularly strong chewers may need a different material strength. Compare the total price, including delivery, before buying. Source: KONG, Größen- und Materialauswahl.
For the first try, loosely add some familiar, tolerated food so your dog can reach it easily. Stay nearby, inspect the toy before every use and discard it if damaged. It replaces neither time together nor training.
Take the filling from the planned daily food allowance. Extra snacks count towards daily energy: WSAVA recommends keeping treats below ten per cent of daily calories. If your dog follows a prescribed diet or has intolerances, discuss suitable fillings with your vet. Source: WSAVA, Leckerlis für Hunde.
Our food calculator provides a calculated starting point for portions based on weight, body condition, activity and food energy. It does not diagnose allergies or create an individual diet. If you also add rice or potatoes, our guide to accounting for extras can help.
A freshly combed Westie against a quiet background makes a lovely subject. See here how that photo looks as a portrait in a wooden frame on the wall.
Your check before deciding
- You want to go outdoors with your dog every day and enjoy practising together.
- Grooming and its costs have a fixed place in your weekly plan.
- You can arrange care when your day lasts longer than expected.
- You are willing to get to know the individual dog rather than deciding only by breed image and coat colour.
If you can answer these points concretely, meeting a dog in person is worthwhile. Ask about their previous routine, care needs and known health findings. Our own video “West Highland White Terrier: So anstrengend ist die Rasse wirklich” adds an overview of temperament, activities and health.
If you are still deciding between a Westie and other breeds, our book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German) helps you make an honest comparison with your daily life. All our guides are on the books page.
