Can dogs eat Brussels sprouts?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat Brussels sprouts, cooked and chopped. In a vet-reviewed article, PetMD says Brussels sprouts are fine for dogs in moderation, provided they are prepared plain.

Why Brussels sprouts are fine

Cooked Brussels sprouts provide fibre and vitamins C and K. They are not toxic, a point also stressed by a vet quoted by the American Kennel Club. They have no specific entry in the ASPCA’s plant database. The drawback is digestion: according to PetMD, Brussels sprouts contain raffinose, a sugar that dogs, like humans, find hard to digest. The result is wind, sometimes a lot of it.

What to watch out for

  • Never whole: A whole sprout is large enough to get stuck in the throat or block the intestines. Halve or quarter it.
  • Cooked rather than raw: PetMD advises against raw and frozen Brussels sprouts. Steamed until soft is better.
  • Remove the stalk: The hard stalk is difficult to digest.
  • No extras: No bacon, butter, onions, garlic or salt.
  • Start small: Offer one bite the first time, then see how your dog tolerates it.

What if your dog eats too much?

Wind is unpleasant but usually harmless. Provide water, go for a gentle walk and offer less next time. According to the AKC, call your vet if symptoms last longer than a few days or your dog develops vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhoea. Also call if your dog has swallowed whole raw sprouts and is gagging.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
