Gifts for horse lovers: 9 ideas without guessing sizes

Horse portrait on canvas being unwrapped as a gift

You want to make someone happy whose phone is full of horse photos. In the tack shop you end up facing halter sizes, rug measurements and the question of which colour goes with the rest of their gear. Luckily, a personal gift can be found without any of that knowledge.

The best choice starts with three questions: Do you have a good photo of the horse? Is the gift meant for use at home or at the yard? And would the person be happiest with something personal, something practical or time together?

What to know before you buy

Halters, bits, rugs and riding helmets are best bought only from a specific wish list. Fit, purpose and personal preference matter here. A surprise is not worth much if the gift ends up unused.

Treats are not a gift that suits every horse either. Ask the owner beforehand whether treats are allowed and which ones. Extra snacks may be unsuitable for a horse that is overweight, prone to laminitis or on a prescribed diet. The British Horse Society recommends watching the sugar content when using food for enrichment and counting extras as part of the daily ration. When in doubt, give something for the person instead.

Nine gift ideas to suit different people

1. A mug with their own horse

For the morning coffee, a familiar horse's head is often more personal than a random rider slogan. Our personalised horse mug with photo can be designed with a photo, a style and a name. You see the design in the live preview before ordering.

First think about where the mug will be used. For the kitchen or office, ceramic is the obvious choice. For on the go, there is also a stainless steel thermal mug with a lid. The magic mug needs special care and must not go in the dishwasher. Choose the version to suit the recipient's everyday life, not just the product picture.

2. A horse portrait that suits their home

A horse portrait on canvas suits people who want their horse around them at home too. What matters is less the breed than the style of the room: a calm watercolour looks different from a bold oil painting or a playful royal style.

Measure the free wall space before you choose the size. Someone living in a small flat does not automatically need the largest format. If you hardly know their taste in decor, ask for a photo of the intended spot or choose a smaller piece that stands on its own.

3. A portrait that needs no nail

For a desk or shelf, a horse portrait as an acrylic stand is an alternative to a wall picture. The design stands on a wooden base; the shop describes the sizes 13 × 20 and 20 × 30 cm.

This is especially handy if you do not know whether someone wants to hang pictures. Still, check that the chosen spot has enough standing space. Name and extra line should stay easy to read in the preview.

4. A slogan mug when you lack the right photo

A gift does not have to fail because of a missing horse photo. The horse mug “Home is a warm horse's neck.” combines a fixed design with a saying; the horse's name can be added on request. The printed slogan is in German: “Zuhause ist ein warmer Pferdehals.”

Make sure the tone suits the person. Some like a quiet, loving sentence, others prefer stable humour. On this mug the design sits on one side. So check the orientation in the product pictures instead of assuming a print on both sides.

5. A head torch for dark paths and free hands

Anyone who drives to the yard early in autumn or is still out in the evening can make good use of a simple head torch. Ask beforehand whether they already have one and whether the person prefers batteries or a rechargeable battery.

One suitable option is the Petzl TIKKINA in red at Amazon (advert / affiliate link). According to the manufacturer it has a wide beam, three white light levels and a maximum of 300 lumens. It runs on three AAA batteries; the compatible CORE rechargeable battery is available separately. IPX4 means splash protection, not protection when submerged. “Red” here refers to the colour of the housing, not a red-light mode.

For walks on foot and simple tasks this is a simple, practical option. Anyone who explicitly wants USB charging without an extra purchase or a red light needs a different model. Point the beam downwards and not into the eyes of people or horses. The lamp replaces neither the lighting required on public roads nor suitable safety equipment.

6. A photo session with horse and human

Many horse people have hundreds of pictures of their animal, but hardly one in which the two are together. Give a joint photo session: you organise time and place, take the photos yourself or contribute towards a professional session.

Agree on who leads the horse safely and what it puts up with calmly. Do not create a startling moment just so the ears point forward for the photo. A familiar person, daylight and patience achieve more than a hectic staging. Our guide to photographing horses helps with framing and perspective; safe handling always comes before the shot.

7. A free morning with a clear agreement

Time can be the most valuable gift. If you know the routines and are suited to it, you can take over part of the yard duties after agreeing with the owner and the yard. Feeding, medication and leading a horse, however, are not tasks to try out on the spur of the moment.

Without horse experience you can help in other ways: take over the drive to the yard, bring a warm snack or help with a tidy-up agreed in advance. Write on a card what you offer and when it is possible. “A Saturday morning by arrangement” is easier to redeem than a vague “I'll help you sometime”.

8. A horse colouring book for a quiet afternoon

For children who love horses, a colouring book together with suitable pencils can be a lovely gift. On our books page you will find the horse colouring book and the way to order it. Check the current age recommendation and edition there and with the seller.

Our horse colouring book video on YouTube gives a short look inside. It shows colouring designs; it is not a guide to horse keeping. The gift becomes even more personal if you add shared colouring time instead of just handing over the book. The video is in German.

9. A voucher with a personal idea attached

If photo, style or product are still open, a PrintMyPet gift voucher is a sensible choice. The recipient can choose the right design and product themselves. Check the currently offered amounts and conditions directly in the shop.

A card turns it into more than a sum of money: “For a picture of you and your horse” or “So your favourite photo gets a place at home”. That way the choice stays free, and the gift still carries a personal thought.

Choosing the right horse photo

For a portrait, the eyes, coat markings and the outline of the head should be clearly visible. If possible use the original file rather than a screenshot or a picture that has been forwarded many times. Both ears should stay completely in the frame; strong backlight and motion blur make the design harder.

If possible choose a photo without a distracting halter. Do not assume that equipment is removed automatically. Check the crop, the spelling of the name and the chosen style in the live preview. You will find the available background options on the respective product page.

A memorial picture of a horse that has passed away is a very personal idea. If you do not know whether the person would be glad of it right now, ask gently or choose a different gift.

A good decision in five minutes

Have a photo and know the decor style? Then a portrait is an option. Have a photo, but little space? Look at the mug or the stand. No photo, but you know the horse's name? A matching slogan mug can work. The person is often out in the dark? Consider whether they need a head torch. Wishes and equipment completely unclear? Give time or a voucher.

For a fixed occasion, check the current delivery estimate for the specific version. A design shown in the preview does not mean the finished product will arrive in time. If it gets tight, hand over a personal card and choose together afterwards.

You will find more suitable products in our collection for horse people. In the end, the best gift is the one that shows: I understand what matters to you about your horse and your daily life.
